Having worked at a hotel reception reception desk, I think I have some idea why they don't go home and save the money. For starters that's where the wife is waiting. Even more often than the wife, that's where the parents are. We would actually have people check in who lived just one block away from the hotel.
Seriously, the Russians are just 1 pound behind Americans in spending on foreign hotels. How does that happen? The rich don't seem like the type that would use hotels. There is no middle class in Russia - you know the demographic that would actually use hotels.

I wonder if Singaporeans may be paying to stay in the new casino complex as a once off fun thing to do? Depends on when survey data is gathered. This article is geared towards the limited few who can build hotels to take advantage of the high prices.
I'd prefer an article on where the cheapest hotel rooms are. Also, does the author really not understand the importance of infidelity and prostitution in the hotel industry? Over 85 pct of Singaporeans live in government built public housing. Hotels offer easy access to swimming pools and other leisure amenities and a convenient way to take a weekend break. I believe MM is explaining why Singapore has a high demand for hotel rooms, and why people can't "just go home.
