You have to climb up about ten levels to reach the top. There are so many impressive carvings along the way that make the climb in scorching midday heat and humidity more tolerable. This is the most impressive sight in Java. We fascinated to learn that the temple is almost exactly in the centre of Java and wondered how anyone could have figured out that location so long ago without divine guidance.
Our ship arranged for 7 large tours buses complete with a Police escort to ensure we could make the best of notoriously dense traffic. This was the most popular tour on our cruise.
