What is Gum Recession? Gum recession involves gum tissue pulling back from your tooth, exposing the root. This can result in increased sensitivity, particularly when consuming hot and cold foods. Since gum recession is a slow and gradual process, many patients do not even notice the change in their gumline.
However, if left untreated, receding gums can result in tooth loss. To restore the gums to their natural state, gum grafts are needed. Types of Gum Graft There are three different types of gum graft surgeries: Connective tissue grafts This is the most common type of gum graft surgery. During the surgery, we will open up a flap of skin from the palate and remove tissue from under it; called the subepithelial connective tissue.
The tissue will be stitched to hide the exposed tooth root, and the flap at the roof of the mouth is stitched back up by the end of the procedure. Free gingival grafts This gum graft is used on people who have thin gums and need extra tissue to enlarge their gum area.
In this process, a flap of tissue is cut directly from the roof of the mouth and stitched to the existing gum area. In this case, we will partially cut the gum tissue growing near the tooth, keeping one edge attached. We will then stretch it over the exposed root and hold it in place with stitches.
